First Nations Community Building Retrofit Program

The Save on Energy First Nations Community Building Retrofit Program (FNCBRP) offers funding and technical support to on-reserve First Nation communities for energy-efficiency projects. These projects aim to enhance the energy efficiency of band-owned commercial and institutional facilities, manage electricity use effectively, and reduce energy costs.

Program Highlights

  • Up to $330,000 in funding for energy-efficiency upgrades.
  • On-site energy assessments and audit reports for up to 15 facilities.
  • Community benchmark reports for prioritizing facilities.
  • Project support from Save on Energy’s program delivery partner.

Eligibility

The program includes all on-reserve First Nations communities in Ontario connected to the provincial electricity grid. Additionally, commercial and institutional facilities must be on band-owned land and operated for the community's benefit. A Band Council Resolution is required for participation, ensuring decisions align with community interests.

How it Works

The program offers two main approaches: Direct Install and Community Install. In Direct Install, Save on Energy's partner oversees the installation, making all band-owned commercial and industrial facilities eligible. In Community Install, communities lead with support, with funding available for feasibility studies, especially for complex retrofit projects in facilities like water treatment plants, arenas, and street lighting installations.

Benefits

  • Gain a better understanding of energy use and identify energy cost-savings for a variety of band-owned commercial and institutional facilities
  • Funding is available for feasibility studies of complex retrofit projects.
  • Eligible facilities include water treatment plants, arenas, and street lighting.
